Discover the Different Types of Ear Piercings

After a long time when people typically wore just one earring in each ear, piercings have changed the way individuals develop their own style.

Today, you can choose from a wide variety of options with features that suit everyone’s tastes. Ear piercings have ultimately become a very original way to add touches of personality to our everyday appearance.

Before choosing, it’s worth understanding the different options. Placement, the type of piercing required, and aftercare are just as important as selecting the most appropriate jewel in each case so the piercing feels comfortable and elevates your style.

Earlobe piercing

This is the most common way to wear an earring. Earlobe piercings are placed in the fleshiest, softest part, so healing is quick and pain is minimal. In these cases, the hole is made in the classic way—from front to back.

Many types of jewelry suit earlobe piercings, from small studs perfect for everyday wear to long stone earrings to shine at special occasions.

Upper lobe piercing

The ideal choice for those seeking a different look without straying far from the most conventional option. These piercings sit just above standard lobe piercings, in a slightly thicker, less fleshy area.

Here, the range of recommended earrings is more limited, as it’s best to go for pieces that sit close to the ear or small hoops that stand out subtly. For bolder looks, you can opt for more complex designs or sparkling elements.

Tragus

One of the most popular piercings, it’s placed in the cartilage just in front of the ear canal. As with the previous types, it requires a classic perforation, but it’s slightly more painful since the cartilage is denser than the lobe.

Small balls or flat stones are the best choice to make the tragus subtly stand out.

Small hoops are one of the most popular choices, while earrings with small, lightweight stones that don’t add too much weight are perfect for an elegant look.

Antitragus

Located directly opposite the tragus, on the lower part of the cartilage. Although it’s one of the less common piercings, wearing it makes a style statement.

For comfort, it’s best to choose small earrings—ideally with a flat base. To add a touch of sparkle, lightweight stones are a striking choice.

Helix

A very popular option for wearing a row of earrings along the rim of the ear, placed on the upper outer cartilage. It requires a classic piercing that needs more care because it takes longer to heal.

Studs fit the helix perfectly, as do straight bars and hoops with small charms.

Antihelix (snug)

Piercings on the inner ridge of the cartilage, above the ear canal, look modern and very eye-catching. However, before choosing a snug, keep in mind the piercing is usually painful.

Given its location, curved earrings or small bars are the best options. Choose lightweight jewelry to reduce both weight and friction on the ear.

Inner helix (daith)

Placed on the inner part of the cartilage, near the ear canal, it offers a striking look.

Tiny hoops or studs are common choices for the inner helix, but small earrings with lightweight stones ensure a unique style.

Flat helix

This piercing sits between the helix and antihelix, on the flat area of the upper cartilage, resulting in a modern, versatile look.

For everyday wear, microbars and small earrings are the most suitable, while stone-set pieces, as long as they’re very light, will transform your look for special occasions.

Conch

Worn in the hollow of the ear, in the middle of the cartilage, it delivers a very striking result. Due to its location, the piercing can be tricky to perform.

Small hoops and studs are perfect for conch piercings. To switch up the look, choose earrings in different colors or with lightweight stones depending on the occasion.

Rook

One of the less common piercings, it’s placed in the upper inner cartilage and creates a surprising, standout look.

Hoops with small charms are often the top choice for rook piercings, as are curved pieces or bar shapes.
